Family

We live in Mesa, Arizona, and have 4 sons and 1 daughter. Our oldest son, Ryan, served a mission to Argentina, just got married Dec. '09, and is a junior at BYU. Our daughter, Alexis, is currently Arizona’s Junior Miss 2009, and was a finalist in America’s Junior Miss last summer in Mobile, AL. She is a freshman at BYU. Our son, Austin, is 16 and has passed up his dad in height, plays rugby, and discovered his tenor voice. Our last two boys are Tanner age 12, and Dallin age 10, who are typical boys who love sports and sometimes like to practice the piano.

Profession

I was engaged to Jeff Flake the entire 10 months I was in Young Ambassadors. I knew I had married the right guy because he was completely supportive and very patient while I lived out my childhood dream! We were married exactly one week after I returned from our tour to the Middle East in 1985. The tables have turned now. I wait patiently most weeks for him to return from Washington, D.C. where he serves as a Congressman representing the 6th district of Arizona in the U.S. House of Representatives. Jeff was elected in 2000, and the past decade has been quite an experience for our family. Being a congressional spouse has given me some wonderful opportunities to travel to over 30 countries and meet unique people. Our favorite thing to do when we travel is look up the missionaries and attend church whenever we can. Being a Young Ambassador certainly prepared me for these experiences.

After BYU graduation, Jeff and I moved to Washington, D.C. where we both worked on Capitol Hill. We then lived in the southern African country of Namibia in 1989-1990. We moved to Arizona in 1992 and through the years I taught private piano, and directed a girls show choir. I sang around the state for 5 years with a women’s double trio. Occasionally I have opportunities to sing for political events here in Arizona and Washington. I love playing tennis in a competitive league, and serve on our school’s PTO board. Currently I’m the stake Young Women’s music director and loving every minute of it!

Other

I’m really looking forward to our upcoming 40th reunion and seeing many of you again. I never dreamed I’d have another chance to perform on the De Jong stage where two of my kids would be in the audience as BYU co-eds!
